Winding Keys

Key #B-6 - A brass, #6 wing-style winding key for many antique American "time and strike" clocks (made in Connecticut, USA). Fits most mantel and wall clocks by Seth Thomas, Ingraham, Sessions, Gilbert, New Haven, Ansonia, and others. No small end for timekeeping adjustment. This key is for clocks on which the timekeeping is adjusted with the pendulum thumbscrew.

Key #ST-44 - A brass, small double ended #4 wing-style winding key with small end for timekeeping adjustment for many antique American "time and strike" as well as "time, strike, and chime" clocks (made in Connecticut, USA). Fits Seth Thomas #48 (time and strike); also Seth Thomas #124 (time, strike, and chime). This key is for clocks which have a small "F/S winder" on the front (for "fast and slow").

Key #ST-64 - A brass, large double ended #6 wing-style winding key with small end for timekeeping adjustment for many antique American "time and strike" clocks (made in Connecticut, USA). Fits Seth Thomas #89 (time and strike), and other makes and models. This key is for clocks which have a small "F/S winder" on the front (for "fast and slow").

Key #B-10 - A brass, #10 wing-style winding key for many antique German "time and strike" clocks. Fits most mantel and wall clocks by Junghans.

Key #H-4 - A small sized, wing-style winding key for German-made mechanisms in modern clocks. (It is similar to, but smaller than the #H-8.) This key fits clocks with German-made mechanisms (movements) by Franz Hermle and Hermle Black Forest. This key fits the Chelsea Ship Strike and Boston Ships Strike clocks. It also fits the Seth Thomas Helmsman, Seth Thomas Corsair and Seth Thomas Redding models, and the Schatz Royal Mariner Conversion and other types.

Key #H-4 also fits some mantel, bracket, shelf, and wall clocks by: Howard Miller; Ridgeway; Ethan Allen; New England Clock Company (Co.); Seth Thomas; Wuersch; Mason & Sullivan; and others.

Key #H-8 - is (in most cases) the key you need if you're seeking a Howard Miller mantel clock key, or Howard Miller wall clock key. Fits Howard Miller westminster chime and triple chime clocks. Also fits westminster and triple chime clocks by other manufacturers (see below).

It is a large sized, wing-style winding key for German-made mechanisms in modern clocks. (It is similar to, but larger than the #H-4.) The H-8 key fits modern clocks with German-made mechanisms (movements) by Franz Hermle, Hermle Black Forest, and Kieninger. Company (Co.); Harris and Mallow; and others. If your clock is by any of the above makers and has three (3) winding holes, and plays westminster or triple chimes (Westminster, Whittington, St. Michaels) this is the key that you need.

Not sure whether to order an H-4 or an H-8 key? Please see: How to order / Not sure which key to order?

Key #CH-6 - A FACTORY GENUINE winding key for the Chelsea Ship's Bell clock (the classic Chelsea Clock with the American-made mechanism). This key also fits vintage Chelsea clocks (including antique Chelsea deck clocks, phenolic case, etc. plus the Millennium, The Constitution, and other models), not just the "Ships Bell" type. If you have a Chelsea clock that has the American-made mechanism that's manufactured in Chelsea, Massachusetts USA, then this is the genuine key for your clock.

Key #S-8 - A wing-style winding key for the original Schatz Royal Mariner Ships Bell Clock made by the Schatz company in Germany from the 1960s to the 1980s (it is not for the Schatz Royal Mariner Conversion, which uses Key #H-4).

For information on the Schatz Royal Mariner Conversion, click HERE.

Key #Schatz-LS - A Schatz long-shaft, wing-style winding key key that fits the Schatz "Coach" and "lantern style" anniversary (400-day) clocks.

Key #C-8 - with a dark-colored knob. (For a lighter-colored knob, please see key #C-8/L, below).

This is the key you need if you’re seeking a Howard Miller grandfather clock key, but it fits most other brands as well. It is a crank-style winding key that fits modern grandfather clocks that have mechanisms by Franz Hermle, Hermle Black Forest, Kieninger, and Urgos, such as: Howard Miller, Ridgeway, Ethan Allen, Trend, Sligh, Baldwin, Colonial and Colonial Molyneux, Heritage Heirloom, Seth Thomas (Talley Industries), Barwick, Mason and Sullivan, Emperor Clock, and others.

[Two keys will be sent, one of which will fit. Please try both, keep the key that fits, and return the unused key to me in the postage-paid envelope that I supply.]

Lock #LK-4

If your original lock is worn out or damaged, but you're not sure which one to order, then unlock and open the door, remove the lock, and mail it here for matching.

Part #LK (I will match a new lock to your old one) - New Lock and Key, complete (must have original lock for matching).

KEYS:

JFK sells keys for modern grandfather clocks (Howard Miller, Sligh, Ridgeway, Trend, Ethan Allen, etc.) and can probably supply what you need.

The most common key is for Howard Miller Clocks.

Key #DK-HM - key for MOST Howard Miller grandfather clocks made since about 1990.

If you do not need the "Howard Miller" key, or if you are unsure which key you need, I can either match a key to your existing lock, or to the broken key; or, I can supply an assortment of keys, one of which is sure to fit your clock.

Method #1.) Please send your clock's lock (if the door is not locked shut) or its broken key (both pieces, if it's broken in two) and request that a new key be matched to it. The cost will be $20 to $25 plus postage, for keys ordered in this fashion. Use a padded manila/cardboard envelope, well sealed, to send them. Do not send locks or keys in a regular #10 paper "business" envelope!

Key #DK (new key, matched from your lock or from your broken key) - (you provide me with the existing lock or the broken/worn out key, so that I can match a new key to them).

Method #2.) If you cannot supply the lock or key for matching (if the door is locked shut, and the key is missing, for example), for a service fee plus postage I will supply a key assortment. Upon receiving the assortment, try all the keys in your door, keep the key that you need, and please return the extras in the postage-paid envelope that I will supply. Please see "DK-ASST" below.

Key #DK-ASST (assortment of keys) - (I will supply an assortment of door keys for you. Keep the one that fits, please return the extras.)

How to Select a Winding Key

First of all, don't just guess and click! You might choose correctly, but you may choose incorrectly. This results in disappointment, and the hassle of needing to exchange the key and order again. Why not get it right the first time?

1.) Compare the keys listed on this website, to type of clock that you have. Just compare my photos and descriptions of keys to the type of clock you own, and this should be sufficient. Note: Measurements in inches and in millimeters for all keys, are being tabulated and will be put online soon. This will make selection of a key even easier.

2.) Ask me! If you have any doubt as to which key to order, please contact me for help, for information, or for clarification before ordering. Please also see Not sure which key to order?, below.

Don’t See What You Need? Not sure which key to order?

If you do not see the type of key that you need on this web page, please tell me what type of key you know you need, and inquire if I can supply it.

If you do not know which key to order, then for a $10 consulting fee JFK will determine which key you need based on your description of your clock.

Click HERE to make a $10 payment for JFK to determine which key your clock uses.

After your $10 payment has been made, please send a description of your clock, and please tell me any engravings that are on your clock's mechanism, if it's possible for you to see them. Or, take a digital photo* of the front of your clock, and the rear inside of your clock if possible (so that I can see the face of the clock and its mechanism), and either email them to me, or print them on your printer and mail them to me. If possible, please measure the size of the clock's winders as accurately as possible, in inches or millimeters.

I will probably be able to determine from your description and/or your photos, which clock key you need and will provide you with instructions on how to purchase the key if I have it available.

If JFK can supply the key that you need, and if you choose to purchase it from JFK, then the $10 you have paid for the "consulting fee" will be credited toward your purchase. Please note: The $10 is a "consulting fee" and is non refundable. If I cannot supply the key or if you choose to purchase it elsewhere, the $10 covers the "time spent" by JFK to research your description and provide an answer. Thank you for your understanding..

*If you CANNOT, or DON'T KNOW how to, or DO NOT WISH to learn how to use a digital camera: you can take regular 35mm pictures or Polaroid pictures, put them in an envelope, and mail them here the old-fashioned way. Please enclose a check for the $10 fee, with your inquiry.

Questions? Not sure which key to order? Want to inquire as to whether I can supply what you need? Want to mail or e-mail clock photos to me? Contact Me.
